1. Captain: Pilot in Command of the flight; occupies the left seat in the flight deck
2. First Officer: Pilot second in command; occupies the right seat in th eflight deck
3. Chief Pilot: Manager of all pilots
4. Crewmember: Captain, First Officer, and/or Flight attendant
5. Director of Operations: A management pilot position required by FAR
6. Flight crewmember: A pilot assigned to duty during a flight
7. Able-Bodied Person: A person selected by crewmembers to assist in a n emer- gency situation
if required
8. Guest: Person traveling aboard an aircraft; BA term for a Customer or Passenger
9. Revenue Guest: A guest that pays a fare for their ticket
10.Non-Revenue Guest: A guest that is traveling on a free or service charge ticket (usually an
employee)
11.Through flight: A flight that makes an intermediate stop without changing flight number; BA
uses the
12.Through Guest: A guest who is continuing on after a scheduled stop
13.Unaccompanied Minor: A child not accompanied by an adult
14.Airstairs: Stairs used to board or deplane an aircraft; also called a Ramp Stand
15.Fixed Based operator: Airport facilities typically associated with private aircraft

24.Deplaning: Leaving the aircraft
25.Flight Deck: The area of the aircraft where the pilots sit and the aircraft is controlled
26.Forward: The front portion of the aircraft; as a direction, toward the flight deck
27.Fuselage: The body of the airplane, holds all the pieces together
28.Galley: The "kitchen" area of the aircraft where service items/supplies are stowed/
prepared
29.Jumpseat: A retractable seat that Flight attendants sit in for taxi, takeoff, and landing

31.Pressurization: When an aircraft is pressurized as close to sea level as possible
32.Situational Awareness: The behavior of a crewmember who is constantly considering
their surroundings throughout a flight
33.Charter: A flight where a group of individuals (like a tour group or sports team) rents the
entire plane
34.Deadhead: Crewmember travel for duty at the direction of the company
35.Domicile: The base of operation where a crewmember is assigned
36.Ferry: Transfer of an aircraft from one point to another without revenue guests
37.Intermediate Stop: Any city where a flight stops between its origination and termination
point
38.Layover: Time spent between flights at a city other than a crewmember's home base
39.Non-stop Flight: A flight that goes from one city to another without interruption or
intermediate stops
40.Per Diem: Money earned as reimbursement for meals while away from base (Latin: For

41.Recurrent: Training required by the FAA on a regular basis- usually annually

43.Turn or Turn Time: The time spent readying the aircraft for its next departure
44.Turnaround: A flight that originates and returns to the same location on the same day
