Assignment 2: Compare and Contrast Two Argument Essays
, Introduction
For many years, capital punishment has spiked debates worldwide with many human rights
groups emerging to oppose the practice. The death penalty is one oldest forms of punishment that
dates back to the earliest societies. This form of punishment has been used for punishment of
some of the most severe crimes such as murder. Advocates of capital punishment believe that it
serves to deter criminals with opponents fighting for the right to life for all people including
convicted criminals. Through consideration of both perspectives on the matter, we will have an
understanding of the fight for justice and the quest for a humane justice system. This report will
be comparing two essays to unravel ethical, societal and justice perspectives on the death
penalty.
Arguments for Capital Punishments
Advocates of death penalty purport that death penalty should not be such a big issue because
after all, everyone must face reality of death. This point is void and lacks weight because it
undermines the value of human life. Downplaying the death of people can also be used against
seeking justice for the victims and therefore this remains a fallacy that is based on assumption.
It can be argued that death penalty can help the society to get rid of criminals. This reason is
given by an account of authority whereby the leaders have the responsibility for ensuring the
safety of everyone through the criminal justice system. This reason remains valid considering the
case of serial killers who end up killing people on a mass scale or drug traffickers responsible for
the lives of a vast number of people. Whoever, one can argue that life imprisonment serves the
same purpose and dispute it.
