if the patient refuse medication / treatment – ACCEPT
If the patient is taking the medication for quite some time :
PRIORITY : document immediately the refusal
LEGAL BASIS : Code of Ethics (BON Resolution No. 220, series of 2004)
Waiver → MD’s job ; NEVER ANSWER WAIVER!
Explaining the action of the drug → MD’s job ; NEVER ANSWER EXPLAIN!
If the medication is new :
Explain the consequences of refusal.
PRIORITY : document immediately the refusal
💡 PATERNALISM
Doctor makes the decision
Withhold the autonomy of the patient for his benefit because the patient’s condition is unstable
e.g., complete bed rest without bathroom privileges
💡 INFORMED CONSENT
Who gives the consent? – PATIENT
→ informed consent even in emergency : still be sign
→ exception : if life is already in danger
Legal age – 18 and above (#1 REQUIREMENT)
Sound mind – conscious/coherent
Minor – NEXT OF KIN (follow the hierarchy)
