PREFACE
Ideally, a textbook serves as a tool in the student’s learning kit and as a link between instructor
and students, a shared experience that both teaches students and supports the teaching of the
instructor. We hope that this manual will help you achieve the best possible support from the
text in your teaching efforts, thus strengthening your bond with students.
We have based the discussion and suggestions here on our classroom experiences with the text’s
materials. When appropriate, we have given answers to exercises and questions. But, because
many of these have more than one right response, we have often given a typical student response
or suggested ways that the exercise or questions can be used in class. When discussing the
readings, we offer possible answers to questions and suggest strategies for class use or possible
writing assignments.
