Q1 . What are hydrocarbons ? How is it classified ?
Ans. Hydro carbons are compounds made up of hydrogen and carbon. It is
classified as follows
Q2. What are Saturated and Unsaturated hydrocarbon ?
Ans. Saturated hydro carbon- They are hydrocarbons that contain only
single bonds between carbon atoms. Example – Alkanes
Unsaturated hydrocarbon – They are hydrocarbonsthat have double or
triple covalent bonds between adjacent carbon atoms. Example – Alkenes
and Alkynes.
Q3. Ethane with the molecular formula C2H6 has how many covalent bond.
Ans. Ethane has 7 covalent bonds. One bond is between two carbon
atoms and rest of the six are between hydrogen atom.
Q4. Give two reasons for carbon forming a large number of compounds.
Ans. Two reasons for forming large number of compounds are Catenation
and Tetravalency.
Q5. Define catenation .
Ans. The property of self- linkage of atoms of an element through covalent
bonds in order to form straight chain , branched chain or cyclic chains of
different size is called catenation.
Q6. Carbon has a unique property to form bonds with other atoms of carbon.
C-C-C-C-C-C
i.Name the characteristic property of carbon as depicted above.
ii.Give reason for this unique property of carbon.
