Large cavity surrounded by abdominal walls. Largest cavity in body
Extends upward I deep to the costal margin to the diaphragm.
Extends downward within ⑭ the bony pelvis.
Partially overlapped by:
Lower thoracic cage (superiorly)
Bony pelvis (inferiorly)
Abdominal cavity

Abdominal cavity proper Pelvic cavity
(Larger upper part) (Smaller lower part)
Boundaries:
Superior: Diaphragm (separates from thoracic cavity, moves with respiration)
Inferior: Pelvic inlet (continuous with pelvic cavity)
Anterior: Anterior abdominal wall (muscles - firm & elastic for protection and expansion)
Posterior: Posterior abdominal wall (lumbar vertebrae & muscles - osteomuscular & rigid for support)
Lateral: Lower ribs & parts of anterior abdominal wall muscles
