RELATIONSHIP
- a state of being related or connected to other people.
- being in a relationship means that you are emotionally involved or connected in some way.
- love is often an emotion that is involved in a relationship

4 TYPES OF RELATIONSHIP
As a child, we are nurtured, respected, and grow up to care for others and develop a strong and healthy
relationship with other people.
1. Family Relationships
Family
- a group of people to whom we are blood-related.
- includes your siblings and parents, as well as your cousins, aunts, uncles and
grandparents.

2. Friends
- someone you know well and regard with affection, trust, and respect.
- everyone needs friends, but as we grow older some of our friends may change and some
may grow deeper.
- the best ways to make new friends is to be involved in school and community activities. Be
friendly and helpful, talk to them, get to know them, and find out if you have something in
common.

3. Casual Relationships
- formed with people we encounter everyday.
- Ex. with our teacher, doctor, guard, tricycle driver, etc.
- we have a casual relationship with anyone who is not our friend or a family member.
- easy to maintain, if we happen to pass with someone we recognize in the street, we can
simply smile at them or say "hello" as a sign of respect and recognition.

4. Romantic Relationship
- involves a person whom we have an emotional connection with.
- it emphasizes being in love with a certain individual.
- in a romantic relationship, you both respect each other and have your own identity.
- brings lots of emotional ups and downs, growing interests in body image and looks,
seeking independence and privacy.

THE SCIENCE OF ATTRACTION AND LOVE

Attraction
- a feeling of interest into something or someone.

2 THEORIES that explain why we get attracted to the opposite sex
1. Evolutionary Need
- every creature in nature attracts a potential mate in order for their species to continue.
The same is true for human beings.
- it is natural for human beings to attract and get attracted to a stronger, healthier, and
attractive mate so that there will be no problem in the continuity of their heritage.

2. The Role of Hormones
- hormones are a form of chemical compounds in our body which is released at various
stages of life and times as when needed.

3 STAGES OF LOVE that are influenced by the different hormones in our body.
● Stage 1 - Lust (erotic passion)
- when we are a teenager, after puberty, estrogen and testosterone become active in our
bodies. It creates a desire to experience "love".
- if the relationship progress, attraction comes.

, ● Stage 2 - Attraction (romantic passion)
- in this stage, we often lose our ability to think rationally, the saying "love is blind" is
experienced.
- the hormones that play their role in this emotional state are dopamine and adrenaline.
- in this stage, couples spend many hours getting to know each other.

● Stage 3 - Attachment (commitment)
- if the 2nd stage attraction remains strong and is felt by both of them, then they usually
enter this 3rd stage
- very much needed for a successful relationship. Oxytocin, vasopressin, and endorphins are
the hormones which are responsible for this feeling.
- we passed fantasy love and are entering into real love. This stage of love has to be strong
enough to withstand many problems and distractions.

EXPRESSIONS OF ATTRACTION
Individuals have different forms of expressing their attraction to other people. In our culture, note that
there are acceptable and unacceptable expressions of attraction.
