Comparing Mental Health and Behavioral Disorders
An excellent state of health is paramount to every person. Mental health and behavioural
health disorders distress individuals from all walks of life and, they affect all age groups. These
disorders are serious because they upset how people make life choices and their relationships
with other individuals in society, however, they do recover if special attention is given to them
by the health professionals. Half of Americans get diagnosed with mental health and behavioural
health-related disorders such as depression which causes loss of lives (Lake, 2017). The paper
discusses depression and anxiety as the mental and behavioural health disorders, it compares and
contrasts their symptoms and behaviours, gives a list that stipulates provider responsibilities that
could effectively work with the patient in a collaborative team approach with descriptions of how
each may function with the team, and implementing preventative programs to mitigate these
disorders.
Depression (Major depressive disorder)
Mental health refers to the psychological, emotional and social well-being of a
person. If an individual has poor mental health, this could have negative effects on cognitive,
social and emotional working. The term depression refers to a mental health disorder that is
characterized by symptoms such as low self-esteem, energy and loss of interests (Marcus et al.,
2015). The affected may exhibit signs of hallucinations and illusions. Research reveals that
depression is severe compared to sadness could result in suicide if not treated (Lake, 2017).
Studies have shown that 300 million individuals suffer from depression worldwide (Marcus et
al., 2015). Therefore, depression is a disabling mental health disease.
