1 The role that parents play in child development is commonly
referred to as ______.
behaviorism
assimilation
socialization
acculturation
2 French historian Philippe Ariès studied portraits of children
and adults to try to understand the life of children throughout
time. He proposed that beliefs about children are ______.
consistent throughout history
social constructions and change over time
unique to each mother and father
not influenced by the family’s culture
3 According to your text, early parenting research was limited
and one-dimensional. This is due to the fact that early
research focused only on ______.
survival and sustenance
monitoring and surveilling
social connectedness
parental love or discipline
4 St. Augustine of Hippo developed the religious doctrine which
stated that ______.
children were tainted by original sin
to spare the rod was to spoil the child
children became sinful if left undisciplined
children were free from original sin
5 In terms of ideas about child discipline, which of the following
religious leaders would be most likely to disagree with the
others about how to punish a child?
John Wesley
Susannah Wesley
John Calvin
Horace Bushnell
Sample response: The stages of the three-stage sequential
model of common factors include the initial support factors
stage, the secondary learning factors stage, and finally, the
action factors stage.
6 John Wesley, the founder of the Methodist Church, advocated
frequent use of physical punishment. Today, the church he
founded ______.
, continues to support the use of physical discipline in the
home
passed a policy against the use of physical discipline in the
home and at school
suggests that physical discipline be used only as a last
resort
no longer makes recommendations about disciplining
children
Sample response: Psychotherapy with individual clients
dominates the profession. 98% of the therapists surveyed in
the Division of Clinical Psychology of the American
Psychological association report conducting some kind of
individual therapy.
7 Evangeline loves her daughter Sarah dearly and believes that
it is her duty to spank Sarah at the first sign of disobedience.
Evangeline most likely believes that Sarah was born ______.
a blank slate
innocent and amoral
tainted with sin
a formless lump
8 Viewing infants as a “blank slate” suggests that ______.
a. they are born without sin or virtue
genes are responsible for their outcomes
experience uniquely influences development
they are born innately evil
9 If parents believe that children are born a “blank slate,” they
will most likely ______.
plan their children’s experiences to shape development
treat their children as little kids so they will mature
allow their children to develop naturally with little
guidance
use harsh discipline to break their children’s will
10 The French philosopher, Jean-Jacques Rousseau, believed that
children ______.
had natural inclinations that were unaffected by parenting
practices and experiences
were sinful and that parents had the responsibility of
correcting the problem
were born as a “blank slate” and should be guided
carefully through experiences
had positive inclinations and needed little help from
parents to develop naturally
Sample response: One of the first issues encountered when
dealing with cybercrime is that there is no universal definition
, of what constitutes cybercrime, although it is generally
divided into two separate types: advanced cybercrimes and
cyber-enabled crimes. Further complicating matters is the fact
that cyber criminals can operate remotely from just about any
place in the world. Given the technical nature of many
cybercrimes, some people may not even be aware that they
have been victimized. When dealing with cyber-enabled
crimes, criminals may extort victims who are reluctant to
contact the police. In addition, traditional methods of
compiling crime data, like the UCR, may report these crimes
as fraud, embezzlement, or prostitution, but they do not
provide information on whether computers were used to
commit these offenses. Similarly, NIBRS may record multiple
crimes, but it does not differentiate between crimes
committed via computers and traditional versions of crime.
The NCVS does occasionally include supplemental questions
regarding cybercrime, but it does not include anyone under
the age of 12, people who are incarcerated, many military
personnel, or people who are homeless, so it may not reflect
the true scope of cybercrime victimization. The Internet Crime
Complaint Center (IC3) allows people to file complaints
regarding cybercrime, but because the IC3 website was used
by cybercriminals to scam people, many may be reluctant to
use this portal for reporting crime.
11 John and Rachael believe that if they do not interfere, their
son will instinctively grow into a caring and loving man. Their
view of parenting most closely resembles the beliefs of
______.
John Watson
John Locke
Jean-Jacques Rousseau
John Calvin
Sample response: Varies. Students may discuss how
measuring crimes helps citizens, law enforcement, and policy
makers to see if a policy is working, to see if there is a
problem with a specific type of crime, and to measure if we
are safe as a society. We have to police members of our
society; without measuring crime, we would not be able to
assess how much crime is actually occurring.
12 “Hardening” was a variety of practices advocated by John
Locke to ______.
protect against infant mortality
determine an infant’s intelligence
deter a child from nail biting
deny a willful child’s protests
Sample response: Varies but should include the fact that
before the UCR Program, studying crime statistics in the
aggregate was extremely difficult. Crime statistics were
, defined and reported in different ways by each law
enforcement agency. We needed uniformity of crime
definitions, how crime statistics were reported, and whom the
statistics got reported to. This uniform system allowed the
FBI and other law enforcement agencies to tract trends in
crime. Law enforcement also had access to standardized
definitions of crimes and the support of the federal
government, who was able to use data to help shape and
guide policy decisions.
13 A loving mother in the 17th century frequently immersed her
infant son in cold water baths. She also dressed him in light
clothes and thin shoes in the winter. Her actions were meant
to ______ through the process Locke called “hardening.”
break his innate willfulness
build his endurance and toughness
punish his original sin
promote his intelligence
Sample response: By design, the NCVS and UCR collect data
on similar types of crimes with very few exceptions. The UCR
only includes data for crimes that have been reported to the
police. Because the UCR only collects data crimes reported to
the police and does not account for the dark figure of crime,
the data are incomplete. The NCVS gets its data from
members of the public. Surveys are used to ask individuals
about victimization, including victim, people who are
incarcerated, and incident characteristics (including whether
the victimization was reported to the police or not). Thus, the
NCVS minimizes the dark figure of crime. Because of the
different data collection methods and differences in crime
classification, the NCVS and UCR may show different results.
14 Luther Emmett Holt, the first prominent American
pediatrician, advocated ______, but told mothers to avoid
soothing their crying babies because it caused “nervousness.”
spanking
consoling
kissing
breastfeeding
Sample response: The precontemplation stage involves no
intention to change at all. The contemplation stage involves
being aware that a problem exists, considering doing
something about it, but not ready to commit to any real
effort. The preparation stage involves intending to take action
within a short time (e.g., weeks, a month). The action stage
involves actively changing behavior and making notable
efforts to overcome the problem. The maintenance stage
involves preventing relapse and retaining gains made during
the action stage.
