Purpose of Assessment
The purpose of this assessment task is to assess your knowledge of Anatomy and Programming.

Instructions for the Student
Read through the following case studies and reflect on your learning and your own research within this
cluster.
Prepare a response that responds to each of the issues presented below. Your responses must reflect your
knowledge, skills, and application for this unit.
• This is an individual assessment
• To ensure your responses are satisfactory, you should consult a range of learning resources and other
information such as handouts, textbooks, credible internet sources, etc.
• You are required to answer the questions based on given scenarios
• The student must be concise, to the point and write answers according to the given word limit to each
question and not provide irrelevant information
• You must write your responses in your own words
• You will be required to complete all parts of this assessment task

Assessment Conditions
• This assessment is untimed
• You may refer to your learning materials during this assessment
• You must read and respond to all questions
• Answers must be typed and submitted through My eCampus for assessing
• You must complete the task independently
• No marks or grades are allocated for this assessment task. The outcome of the task will be Satisfactory
or Not Satisfactory
• As you complete this assessment task, you are predominately demonstrating your written skills and
knowledge to your trainer/assessor

,Please note: A qualified trainer and assessor will review and assess all the submitted comments, observation
checklists, and assessment evidence to determine the students' competence and abilities against the unit of
competency requirements. A trainer and assessor will ensure each assessment has been sufficiently
completed and determine the final assessment outcome.

QUESTIONS
Question 1.1
Explain how a thorough understanding of anatomy and physiology will help you achieve the following
fitness instructor duties.

Fitness Instructor Duty How knowledge of anatomy and physiology will assist you

Interpret pre-exercise Understanding anatomy and physiology will help with interpreting pre-exercise
screening information screening information as I will understand the different parts of the body and
the different roles each part holds. This will help me to understand what kind of
program to give my clients based on any injuries or medical conditions that may
be written down and require me to change the fitness program based on this.
For example, if a client had written down 3-month post op from meniscus
surgery and has given me a letter that his physio has written that they need to
build their quadriceps to strengthen the knee and prevent further injury I will
create a program based on targeting mostly the quadriceps and how many reps
and sets will be required to build the muscle.

Develop exercise To develop exercise programs for different ages, genders, and fitness levels it is
programs suitable for essential to understand anatomy and physiology. If a client was a fit 26-year-old,
different ages, gender, no previous history of injury and wanted to work on building muscle I would
or fitness levels know to give them a split workout program focusing on the main muscles with
compound movements and finishing off with isolated movements at the end.
For a 60-year-old who is not very active with respiratory issues I would know to
make a fitness program based on low intensity exercise and slowly introducing
walking, increasing the time of the walk each week.

Each person is different and have different goals, to understand what kind of
program to make for them I must understand anatomy and physiology.

Provide instructions Knowing the anatomy of the body and how every person’s body anatomy is
about exercise different will help instruct clients about techniques for different exercises.
technique Giving the clients correct technique instructions will ensure that the client does
not get any injuries from wrong movements.

Explain to clients the Every client has a different goal and something that you wish to work on mainly,
purpose of chosen knowing the anatomy and physiology of the body will allow you to explain to
exercises clients why the exercise given will help them reach their goal. Being able to
explain this to the clients allows them to trust the exercises given knowing it will
benefit them and that it will get them to where they need to be.

Question 1.2
Complete the following tables to describe the muscle roles, joint movements, and plane of movement

,during the squat and shoulder press.

Squat

Role during the Squat
Muscle
(prime mover, synergist, antagonist, fixator)

Abdominals Fixator

Hip Flexors Antagonist

Quadriceps Prime mover

Gluteus Maximus Synergist

Concentric (lifting/shortening Eccentric (lowering/lengthening
Joint

Ankle the ankle joint is concentrically the ankle joint is eccentrically
plantar flexing, as the calf muscles dorsiflexing, as the calf muscles
shorten to bring your lower leg control your descent

Knee concentrically extending Eccentrically flexing

Hip concentrically extending Eccentrically flexing

Plane of Movement (sagittal, Sagittal plane

Question 1.3
The body undergoes responses to help keep up with increased demand during exercise. The body also
undergoes various changes from exercise over a long period of time. Provide one expected short term
(during exercise) and long term response to exercise across the below body systems/components.
For each body system/component, identify any variances between males and females.

Body Short-Term Response Long-Term Response
System/Component

Neuromuscular & Oxygen to the muscles increase, Increased coordination and more activation of
Muscular Systems muscle soreness, more fatigue the muscles for more strength and power
and the brain will work faster

Variances between Males will have a higher muscle mass and female muscles generally recover faster.
males and females

Blood Pressure During exercise blood pressure Blood pressure will reduce from more exercise
will increase and after exercise it and weight loss
will reduce

Variances between Females will have a lower blood pressure both while resting and during exercise
males and females

Cardiovascular System Blood flow is improved which Heart and lung will respond better to exercises
and Cardiorespiratory will make a better heart rate
Fitness (CRF)

Variances between Females has a smaller heart chamber which will give a higher resting heart rate.
males and females

Skeletal System More loading on the bones and Flexibility will increase
(Bones and Joints) joint

Variances between Females will lose calcium in the bone at an earlier age than men. Females will also
males and females loose cartilage quicker than men which will cause more pain.

Question 1.4
Complete the table below about cardiovascular circulation and responses.
a. Describe the flow of blood in each circulation pathway.
b. Outline the three main roles of the blood in the body.
c. Describe the effect of exercise intensity on breathing rate and heart rate.

a. Circulation Pathways
