A duty of care exists
- that duty imposes a standard of care, which may be found under the common law
or may be imposed under legislation, that the coach does not meet.
- an athlete or some other person experiences harm.
- The failure to meet the standard of care can be shown to have caused or
contributed to the harm.

What four things may determine the standard of care for athletes - ANSWERS--
written standards: Government regulations, equipment standards, rules for sporting
facilities, rules from a governing sport body.
- unwritten standards: Norms or conventions that may not be written down. Are
still followed and accepted.
- Case law: Court decisions about similar situations.
- Common sense: Doing what feels right or avoiding doing what feels wrong.
Common sense is the sum of a person's experience and knowledge.
