Ischemia
inadequate blood supply to tissue/organ
Angina
chest pain from lack of oxygen
Process of myocardial infarction
Onset of MI:
- Atherosclerosis: artery is narrowed by lipid deposition
- Ischemia: how much blood flow require now vs. how much can be supplied
- thrombus formation
Cellular events:
Step 1: no/low blood flow
Step 2: changes in myocardial metabolism due to low/no oxygen: problem in
gas/metabolites exchange- glycolysis is ok with anaerobic process for a while
Step 3: cell injury
Step 4: cells are partially depolarized= problem in electrical conduction (proceed to
arrhythmia eventually if large area is affected)
Step 5: necrosis if ischemia is not fixed on time: recover if fixed before necrosis
Step 6: loss of muscle function at the necrosis
