Introduction :
The cell is the basic structural and functional unit of all living organisms, often referred
to as the "building block of life." It is the smallest unit capable of performing all essential
life processes, such as growth, reproduction, and metabolism. The study of cells is a
fundamental aspect of biology, as it helps us understand the structure and functioning of
living organisms.
Without cells, life as we know it would not exist. This is why cells are aptly called the
"fundamental unit of life." Understanding cells not only explains how organisms grow
and function but also provides insights into diseases, genetics, and the intricacies of life
at its most basic level.
Discovery :
Discovery of cells dates back to 1665 when Robert Hooke, an English scientist,
observed a thin slice of cork under a primitive microscope. He noticed small, box-like
structures and named them "cells," derived from the Latin word cella, meaning "a small
room.”
Leeuwenhoek ( 1674 ) , with the improved microscope, discovered the free living cells in
pond water for first time.
Robert Brown discovered nucleus in 1831.
