On May 23rd, 1618, protestors carried a petition to Prague’s Palace
- Engaged w/ Church officials in debate, & trial & threw two royal delegates out a
window
- Became Defenestration of Prague, illustrating how the Reformation left Europe to
need some religious patchwork
1555’s Peace of Augsburg ended fighting b/n German protestant & Catholic Provinces
- The state's religion would be the ruler of the state
1572, French protestants (Huguenots) rebelled against Catholics → Civil war & Dutch
revolted from Spanish Catholics
Religious wars broke out in Germany
- Thirty Years' War (1618-1698) destroyed Central Europe = Strengthened
monarchies w/ extended control

France was divided by laws, customs, languages, & traditions
Monarchy ruled w/ uneducated authority in Europe
Religious division → French state crisis & civil war
A Strengthened Monarchy
Francis I & his successors wanted to impose more taxes
- Raising an army or royal revenue depended on the nobility
- Justified requests w/ appeals to common good
Francis reduced Catholic authority in France as royal will became a law
Sold offices to nobility for support & money
Became a mess after Francis I b/c of the four Valois kings
Economic Crisis
C. 1570, France’s pope rose
In the same year, the increase in cultivable land slowed down b/c people outstripped
France’s resources
- Prices rose as agriculture income fell
Taxes & tithes rose
Peasants revolted against landlords (1560-1660)
French Calvinists & the Crisis of the French State
John Calvin’s followers arrive & attract converts (1540-50s)
- Spread led King Henry II to sign the Treaty of Cateau-Cambresis (1559), ending
the struggle b/n France & Spain
Henry II began religious repression = Calvinist Martyrs
Now, attention was turned to combating Protestantism (Many nobles turned Calvinist)
