Global Issue: How the government uses propaganda to infringe on individual freedom
Texts chosen
Literary work: Persepolis by Marjane Satrapi
Non-literary work: Peter Brookes’s Political Cartoons

Notes for the oral (maximum of 10 bullet points):
1. Propaganda: tool used mainly in authoritarian regimes. Tool to mould + control narratives. limits
ability for self-expression. Introduce texts

2. B: Pattern = propaganda in education - Veil: “They are symbols of capitalism” - bilingual = Western
beliefs, ≠ religious homogeneity = contradict principles, official → focal point

3. B: The Key: “And we had to beat our breasts” - propaganda heavily used in education, younger =
easier, lack of individuality = clothes + expressions

4. E: Shahab = constricted , body language + expression = worried, GW ↑ = transition to his memory
(p5), Shahab = Mature + experience = concious of manipulation

5. E: Manipulate young and poor = easy because no outside influence, graphic weight ↑ = isolation,
evilness, no light = no hope (p6), “hypno” + “convince” = propaganda

6. B: Pattern = power influences information - “Your armed forces need you to cough up” → Appeal to
prejudice → “need” = commanding = authoritative, manipulate emotion

7. B: “You won’t catch me with terror sympathisers!” → compromise with Russia = end Syrian civil war
→ Big lie = positive + irony → appeal to authority

8. E: “Don…” + “offer…” = play on words, = authoritative tendancies of Trump → Godfather = power
+ control = ↓ freedom, Puppet TikTok = vessel for wanted information/ censorship

9. E: Caricature = Trump = exaggeratedly large → Composition = dominating → big = attempt to
portray power, however comically small hand = compensating for lack of power

10. Both cover control + expose greed for power, Brookes = reflects national frustration + political
stance, Satrapi = personal frustration + propaganda effect on her
