Lecture 1 the neuropsychologist

What does a neurological examination consist of?

• Patient’s history
• State of awareness
• Physical examination
• Disorders

Define these 4 terms: localization, lateralization, distributed function, and
hierarchical organization

• Localization: the fact that the brain is organized
o Damage was in a certain part of the brain -> concluded that some brain
functions were anatomically located.
o Injury in a certain anatomical location leads to the same symptoms
• Lateralization: some functions are on only one side of the brain, when other
side is damaged no loss of function
• Distribution of function: if something is damaged doesn’t mean you can’t do it
at all, so Broca’s aphasia can still speak a little bit because also other brain
regions process language
• Hierarchical organization: some areas are more sophisticated than others.
Some brain areas process more simple/complex things. First simple than
complex things processed. Damage in higher areas means you can still do
simple tasks for example

How did brain lesions lead to the modern understanding of brain function and
organization?

the study of brain lesions has been instrumental in discovering that the brain is
organized into specialized regions, each responsible for specific cognitive, sensory,
and motor functions, and has also deepened our understanding of how the brain
adapts to injury.

Describe the experiments and case studies that led to the discoveries of
localization, lateralization, distributed function, and hierarchical organization

• Localization was supported by Broca’s and Wernicke’s cases, showing that
specific cognitive functions (like speech) are localized to particular brain regions.
• Lateralization was demonstrated by Sperry’s split-brain research, showing that
functions like language and spatial reasoning are processed predominantly in one
hemisphere.
