, Hard to find questions and answers:
1.1 Identify the figure of speech used in line 1.
Hyperbole
1.2 Explain the effectiveness of this figure of speech in this line.
The availability of words is exaggerated by the use of the word
“everywhere” √ which indicates the abundance of words that come from
reading. √
2. What does the word “daily” suggest about the speaker?
It suggests that the speaker constantly √encounters words.
3. Refer to lines 2-4: (“they fly out…like nobody’s business”)
Explain what the speaker means in these lines. (2)
Words fail with great intensity to come out √ BUT when the speaker is filled
with intense emotions√ of passion or anger they fly out.
4.Explain the effectiveness of the ellipses in lines 4 and 5.
In line 4 the ellipsis after “provoked” emphasizes the idea that the
emotions are intense. √ In line 5 the ellipsis after “understand” stresses the
difficulty that the speaker experiences when words cannot come out/or
when they fly out of your mouth and there is no stopping of the words. √
5. Refer to line 10: (“while words are …some twisted game”)
5.1 Identify the figure of speech in this line.
Personification
5.2 Explain why this figure of speech is relevant in this poem.
Words are described as a person who plays a sick and evil√ game without
caring√ about the feelings of the affected one (receiver).
6. Explain the meaning of line 12 (“as the raindrops slowly slide down.” )
The raindrops represent the speaker’s teardrops as they fall√, and this
suggests that the speaker is deeply hurt by her inability √to recall words.
7. Identify the mood created by the word “cloudy” in line 13.
It is a feeling of intense melancholy / sadness/ remorse. √
