The levels of organization within the body
1. chemical level
2. celular level
3. tissue level
4. organ level
5. organ system
6. organism
Chemical level
The smallest independent structures of the body, which include atoms, molecules and
compounds. This lesson will introduce you to some basic chemical concepts as well as
the major chemical substances/kā pūmatū which are the building blocks for the higher
structural levels of the body.
Celular level
The smallest living structural and functional units, composed of many molecules and
compounds. Cells/Kā pūtau will be looked at in more detail in the next module.
Tissue level
Groups of similar cells that work together to perform common functions. The types of
tissues/kā pūtautau and where they can be found in the body will be covered in more
detail in a later module.
, Organ level
Structures composed of at least two types of kā pūtautau/tissues, and which perform a
unique set of functions. The various organs/kā whanewhane of te tinana will be covered
throughout most of the remaining modules in this course.
Organ systems
Arrangement of numerous organs/kā whanewhane which together perform complex
functions. Most remaining modules in this course will cover specific organ systems and
the complex functions they perform for the body.
Organism
An individual human being composed of a variety of organ systems that work together
to maintain homeostasis. This is you!!
Superior
Means above or towards the head
Inferior
Means below or towards the feet
Anatomical position
tanding upright
Arms at sides
