What is the importance of nursing assessments?

What is an MSE (mental status exam)?
MSEs provide an assessment on someone's mental state in that point in time. It
provides a comparison for future assessments. They require both objective observation
as well as answers directly from the consumer

What are the two main types of Depression
- MDD (Major Depressive Disorder)
- Dysthymic Disorder
What is MDD?
Major Depressive Disorder, a serious depressed mood and other symptoms which
affect all body systems and interferes significantly with a person's ability to carry out
their daily living skills.
What is Dysthymic Disorder?
A chronically depressed mood for most of the day, more days than not, for at least 2
years.
Aetiology of Depression Disorders
- Personal Factors
- Genetic Risk / Family History
- Personality (Over anxious people, perfectionists, self critical, low self esteem)
- Serious Medical Conditions (Stress and Worry of coping with a serious illness)
- AOD Use (Many people with a Depression disorder also have an addiction problem)
- Pathophysiology - Very unknown however antidepressants target the brain's chemical
transmitters (serotonin and noradrenaline)
