Debate 1
Why did autocracy collapse?
WOODG
,ARGUMENTS
The reasons autocracy failed are very similar to
the reasons the provisional government failed,
despites its attempts to promise reform
Aim: Develop arguments on which is the most
convincing view
1. Nicholas II was unfit to rule
2. Autocracy was an outdated form of government
that had failed to reform itself sufficiently
3. Insufficient modernisation of Russia caused
opposition (economic discontent/mass uprising)
4. Revolutionary political movements were more
active after 1903
5. The reforms of Alexander II and Nicholas II
paved the way for liberal democracy (the PG
formed from the Duma, the Petrograd Soviet
from workers unions (Soviets))
6. The First World War toppled the Tsar (his
generals asked him to abdicate)
WOODG

on the February Revolution
- Annotate: What is the main

convincing
