Norms: rules or socially accepted standards that govern people’s behaviour in
certain circumstances. Ie showing respect to the elderly. These keep deviant
behaviours under control. They are quite specific and vary according to culture. For
example, colours to wear to a funeral and being quiet in a library.
Values: they are a reflection of social norms. general principles or guidelines for
how we should live our lives. These are more general than norms as they generalise
what society deems to be good or bad. Like norms, they can also vary from one culture
to another, but some apply to every culture. For example, respecting human life and
treating everyone with respect.
Moral codes: these are lists or rules that individuals, groups or organisations might
live by. They can be written/unwritten. For example, the police code of ethics. Ie
children are innocent and should be kept away from adult information or behaviour.
Deviance is created when people do not believe in the accepted values within society.
