ESWS Operations Fundamentals
SPS-48 - answerLong rang, 3-dimensional (range, bearing, altitude) air search radar.
Mac range 220nm. Controlled by CIC.
SPS-49 - answerTwo dimensional, long range air search radar with high accuracy air
target detection. Max range 256nm. Controlled by CIC.
SPS-73 - answerShort range, two dimensional, surface search/ navigation radar
system. Searches for surface unit and low flying units. Max range 64nm. Controlled by
Bridge.
AN/SPQ-9B (Surface Surveillance and tracking Radar) - answerSearches for missiles
and the waterline. Max range 80nm (Air) and 20 nm (Surf). Controlled by CIC
SPN-43 - answerCarrier surveillance radar. 360 degrees coverage-max range 50nm.
SPN-35A - answerFor aircraft landing operations. Max range 10nm. Controlled by
AATCC.
SPA-25H - answerRadar repeaters for surface radars, 4 onboard: 2 in CIC, 1 in METOC
and in the Pilot House. (RADDS) to include SPQ-9, SPS-49, SPS-48, SPS-73 and SPN-

Ships Self Defense System (SSDS) UYQ-70 Display Console - answerIntegrates and
coordinate all sensors and weapons onboard LHA-6.
Automated Status Board - answer(ASTABS) Tv monitor that continuously updates
inputs entered from remote stations.
KSQ-1 - answerMonitors the movement of boats and troops, especially LCAC's, via
Plats.
Computer Aided Dead Reckoning Tracer (CaDRT) - answerShows a true geographical
plot around own ship, used in man overboard and SAR operations.
Tactical Information Coordinator (TIC) - answerIs responsible for developing and
maintaining a coherent tactical picture on ownship.
Large Screen Display (LSD) - answerA large viewing screen that receives inputs from
SSDS and CVIS.
, Global Command Control System-Maritime (GCCS-M) - answerNear real time fused
picture of the battle space within a modern C4 system capable of meeting the war
fighter's need into the 21st century.
Air Defense System Integrator - answerAllows air contacts to be I putted into GCCS-M
Tactical Action Officer (TAO) - answerThe TAO position is manned by an officer who is
designated, in writing, by the CO to have weapons release authority. The TAO is the
only CIC watchstander with that authority. The TAO is directed by the CO to carry out
operations and defend the ship in accordance with the ship's Battle Orders and force
ROE. The TAO directs all combat system operations and receives recommendations
from all ship sources.
Air Defense Weapons Coordinator (ADWC) - answerThe ADWC is responsible, under
direction of the TAO, for the defense of own ship from air threats. The ADWC is
responsible for defensive battle management, including ownship's weapons
coordination and air intercept activity. The ADWC coordinates with other warfare
coordinators, EWSUP, CICWO, and AICs.
CIC Watch Officer (CICWO) - answerThe CICWO supervises the development of the
battle group and ship's surface picture. The CICWO monitors surface and subsurface
detection, tracking, identification and classification. The CICWO working with the
ADWC, directs and coordinates the employment of anti-surface wayfarer aircraft for
sending and engaging.
CIC Watch Supervisor (CICWS) - answerAssists the CICWO in supervising the
development of the battle group and ship's tracking, identification and classification.
Electronic Warfare Supervisor (EWS) - answerThe EWSUP is responsible for the ship
tactical and strategies EW operations. The EWSUP monitors, evaluates, and directs the
ongoing EW operations as directed by the TAO. This includes ES, EA, and EP. The
EWSUP will have command-by-negation authority from the CO to employ active EA
(devotion, jamming, counter-targeting, counter-surveillance) when defending against
anti-ship missile attacks or directed by IW/C2WC.
Air Intercept Controller (AIC) - answerThe AIC controls aircraft in tactical situations to
VID and defend the force using radar data, IFF data, voice communications, TADIL, and
TACAN.
AATCC - answerThe LHA's/LHD's centralized air control agency responsible for
operational control of aircraft departing the ship and recovery of inbound aircraft after a
mission is complete. Also, responsible for maintaining the status and tactical control of
airborne helicopters in support of amphibious assaults as directed by Helicopter
Coordination Section (HCS).
What is the primary mission of CIC? - answerTo fight the ship
