Unlocking the Power of Percentages
Percentages are a fundamental concept in mathematics, used
to describe changes, proportions, and rates. In essence, a
percentage is a way to express a value as a fraction of 100. It's
a powerful tool for comparing and analyzing data, and it's
used extensively in various fields, including finance, science,
and engineering.
A Simple yet Powerful Concept
To understand percentages, let's break it down step by step.
Imagine you have a pizza that's cut into 100 slices. If you eat
25 slices, you've eaten 25% of the pizza. The percentage sign
(%) is a shorthand way of writing "per 100." So, 25% is
equivalent to 25/100 or 0.25.
Calculating Percentages
There are three main types of percentage calculations:
1. Finding a percentage of a number: To find 25% of 120,
multiply 120 by 0.25 (or 25/100). This gives you 30.
2. Increasing or decreasing a number by a percentage: If a
shirt is on sale for 15% off, and the original price is $80,
calculate the discount by multiplying $80 by 0.15 (or
15/100). This gives you a discount of $12. Subtract the
discount from the original price to get the sale price: $80
- $12 = $68.
