William Shakespeare, he was a very successful playwright, poet and actor
Shakespeare was born in April 1564, in Stratford-upon-Avon, in England. The exact date is not known.
His family was very rich, so he lived in a big house. William enjoyed playing board games or card
games. He was a calm, honest and quiet person and was also quite smart. Shakespeare first went to
Petty School and then he went to Grammar School where he learned to write and speak Latin
because the Grammar School thought that was important. He didn't go to college.
William's parents were John Shakespeare and Mary Shakespeare. John was a glove maker and mayor
for a short time and Mary had no job and came from a very wealthy family. Mary had one more baby
girl, but she died when she was 1 year old before William was born. William had five other brothers
and sisters, and he was the eldest. The family was probably Catholic, but that is not certain because
not much is clear about how they lived. William married Anne Hathaway (she was also known as
Agnes) when he was eighteen and she was twenty-six. When they got married, Anne was already
three months pregnant. Six months later Susanna was born. Two years later they had two more
children, Hamnet and Judith, they were twins. The children were probably raised mostly by their
mother because William spent a lot of time in London. Hamnet died at the age of eleven. It is
unknown what he died of, but it was probably the plague because many people died from it at that
time. Shakespeare probably named his popular play Hamlet after Hamnet. Susanna and Judith, like
most women at that time, could not read or write because they did not go to school. Susanna
married a doctor named John and they had 1 child Elisabeth, who is the only grandchild William has
known. Judith married Thomas Quiney a winegrower and they had 3 children who all died young
named: Shakespeare he died when he was 6 months old, Richard he died at the age of 21 and
Thomas died at the age of 19.
William was active from 1585 to 1613. He wrote mostly Comedies, Tragedies and Histories. He wrote
35 plays and more than 150 poems. Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet and Othello are considered his most
popular plays. In his plays or poems, he often used words that he had invented himself, many words
are still used. For example: addiction, eyeball, lonely and generous. William went to London because
he had probably been given an opportunity for success with his plays. But it was not until four years
later that he had success in London. It is not clear what he did during that time but there are theories
that he was a young actor during those years. When he became successful in London, his name
quickly became popular. Then in 1594 he became an owner of The Lord Chamberlain's Men. The
Lord Chamberlain's Men was a theater group for which William wrote plays and acted in plays and he
became a wealthy man.
: Shakespeare became seriously ill at the beginning of 1616; it is not certain what illness he had but
he probably had syphilis. Shakespeare retired 3 years before his death, and it is suspected that this
was because he was ill. He died 4 months later April 23 around his birthday. He was almost 52 years
old, or he had just turned 52. He made his will one month before he died. William inherited most of
his assets from Judith and Susanna. And he left nothing for his wife, it is unknown why this is. She
died 7 years later. All his pieces were published 7 years after his death.
