Definition: Yellowish discoloration of skin, sclera and mucus membrane due to
increased level of bilirubin is known as jaundice.
• Normal serum bilirubin ranges from 0.3-1.3 gm/dl, and most of this (80%)
bilirubin is unconjugated.
• When bilirubin level rises to > 1.3 mg but up to 2 mg/dl then it is known as
subclinical jaundice, because it is not clinically visible.
• When serum bilirubin rises to > 2 mg/dl then become clinically evident.
