The state EMS office is responsible for authorizing, auditing, and regulating all
emergency medical services, training institutions, courses, instructors, and providers

Describe, in detail, how medical direction functions in the field.
Each system has a physician MEDICAL DIRECTOR who authorizes the EMT's in the
service to provide medical care in the field. The appropriate care for each injury,
condition, or illness that you will encounter in the field is determined by the medical
director and is described in a set of written standing orders and protocols. Protocols are
described in a comprehensive guide delineating the EMT's scope of practice. Providers
are not required to consult medical direction before implementing standing orders.
MEDICAL CONTROL is provided either off-line (indirect) or on-line (direct), as
authorized by the medical director. Online medical control includes direction given over
the phone or radio directly from the medical director or designated physician. The
medical direction can be transferred by the patient's designee; it does not have to be
transferred by the physician himself or herself. .
Offline medical control consists of standing orders, training, and supervision authorized
by the medical director.
