How the company uses its own products or services to enhance the total compensation for
its employees;
In the case study, Aflac uses its own product or services to enhance the total
compensation for its employees, which includes an “employer-paid life insurance, a company-
paid cancer policy and company-subsidized accident protection insurance” (Reed, 2009, p. 4).
Aflac is a company known for being a leader in the insurance industry, and as a result, offered
several of its own products to employees as part of their compensation package.
The internal and external strengths and weaknesses identified and how the company
responded to these factors from a total rewards perspective;
One of the weaknesses Aflac has struggled with includes the area of employee retention.
As a result, the company made the decision to use employee opinion surveys to determine what
was most important to their employees. In addition, Aflac chose to focus on providing a
compensation and benefits packages “that reflect the needs of a multi-generational workforce”
(Reed, 2009, p. 4). As a result, the company became more attractive for employees to remain
with the company across multiple demographics.
Another factor Aflac had to address was the issue of offering benefits which were cost-
effective. More specifically in the area of healthcare benefits. One initiative Aflac sought to
implement focused on communicating with employees the rising healthcare costs needed to be
seen as a shared responsibility. Though not specifically mentioned in the case study, a reasonable
example of how employees can help to keep healthcare costs down would be reminding
employees to use in-network providers, select generic medications when available, and see their
primary care physician instead of the emergency room or urgent care for basic medical needs.
