upper classes)

Killing of wild animals – banned-by Ashoka
This continued even during the British rule.
The Indian Forest Act of 1927 – entrusted
forest officer to deal with wildlife
protection.
, Other acts with local juridiction were enacted by various provinces
includes
1. Elephant preservation Act 1898
2. Rhinoceros Preservation Act 1909
3. Bombay wild animals and wild birds preservation act 1951
4. Hunting & Game control Acts (These were applicable only
to limited areas and none of them was of national scope)
The wild life (protection) Act. Was enacted in 1972 (filled this gap)
It is applicable to all states
Forest and wild life were placed on the concurrent list
Wild life protection Act 1972:
Comprehensive act – for the protection of wild animals and for related
matters
Enacted by parliament in 1972 as 53 rd act.
Made up of chapters & sections.
