L 7a The Cell Membrane
Week W4
Role of the Membrane
Transport raw materials into the cell
used to build new cell structures
provide energy
transport manufactured products and waste out of the cell
Prevent entry of unwanted material into the cell
Prevent the escape of materials inside cell to perform cellular functions
Provide a method of cell to cell communication and cell identification
Membrane Structure & Components
The main molecule of the membrane is a phospholipid
Polar phosphate head and 2 fatty acid tails
both connected to a glycerol
The phospholipids are arranged as a phospholipid bilayer
hydrophillic heads point out towards and face the watery cytoplasm
and extracellular fluids
