Covalent Bonds
Non-Polar covalent
Have an equal sharing of electrons in bonds, no electronegativity difference
Polar covalent
unequal sharing of electrons, slight electronegativity difference
Electronegativity: a measure of an atom’s ability to attract a shared electron
pair when it is participating in a covalent bond.
SCH3U1-01 CHEM
Refer to Electronegativity
Molecular polarity depends on the bond polarity AND molecular shape (asymmetrical)
L1 Chemical Basis of Life 1
, More electrons closer (but not in orbital) means they become slightly more negative
due to the -ive charge.
Facts/Uses of water
Bacteria cells are 70% water
required for photosynthesis
keeps cells rigid
bones contain 20% water by mass
2/3 of the earth’s surface is covered in water
herbaceous plants are 90% water
drink water
Properties
colourless
