Proteins
Week W3
Composition of Protein
Proteins consist of C, H, N, O, and often S
make up more than 50% of dry mass cells
accomplish more tasks than any other biological molecule
Functions of proteins include:
structural building blocks of cells/organisms
hair, fingernails, skin, etc.
enzymes
antibodies in immune system
transport molecules in membranes
blood clotting
Proteins are polymers of amino acids
carboxyl group is a base while amino group is an acid
in acid/base reactions, bases get rid of their hydrogen
therefore hydrogen switches spots in aqueous solution
Proteins 1
, Dry monomer amino acid^^^^
Monomer amino acid in aqueous solution
O- on carboxyl group because water takes away H or something
