, 1b. Description of the role and responsibilities of a nurse innovator:
Nurse innovators are nurses who put ideas into practice. They are the nurses who think
outside the box, especially in today's nursing world where workforce shortages have increased
the need for innovation. Nurse leaders “must begin to think innovatively to grow, expand, and
solve problems amid delivery system reforms (Cianelli et al., 2016).” Nurse innovators are
responsible for divergent thinking where they must think proactively instead of reactively. A
nurse innovator should take on the role of a risk taker. Risk-taking should be encouraged and
rewarded. Their role is to encourage risk-taking behavior so that innovation and change can take
place. A big part of being a nurse innovator is to have failure tolerance which is to accept
failure, which many times can lead to success. Nurses should learn from their failure to grow. A
nurse innovator should also be flexible in the ever-changing healthcare environment. Innovators
should be flexible enough to evaluate change and respond appropriately and promptly (Cianelli
et all, 2016).
In addition to the roles of the nurse innovator, a large part of their responsibilities is
accountability. The nurse leader needs to be accountable for doing the right work and focusing
on the product and results of the work (Weberg et al., 2019). The leader should recognize the
complexity and value of the innovation. They are responsible for ensuring adequate support for
appropriate decisions and actions while integrating evidence-based practice. Finally, the nurse
innovator is responsible for analyzing and collecting data for the innovation and allowing it to
be sustainable.
