, Primary as well as secondary data have characteristics that are similar to each other while
also having characteristics that are different from each other. Primary data is the original data
that had been collected from a first account source. This information, the primary data, is
information that is utilized to aid in the care as well as the treatment process. Primary data is
collected during the front-end process of either preregistration or registration as well as it can be
information given directly from the patient receiving the care or the person who is their caregiver
or responsible party. Secondary data is information that has been gathered from the primary data.
The information that was collected during the front process is then used during the secondary
data gathering as a way to help provide information on a collective scale. Primary data is
collected from one source while secondary data is collected from multiple sources. Aggregated
data is considered secondary data collected on a group scale that has no identifiable data, it is
just the information that is gathered. Patient-identifiable data would be considered both primary
as well as secondary data. This information would be all facts explicitly recorded to a patient
(Oachs, P. & Watters, A., 2020).
Primary data would be an EHR system, for example. Patients are the ones giving
firsthand information and a person, whether at registration or the healthcare provider, enter the
information into the EHR. Secondary data is then gathered from the primary data source and can
be developed into a report, registry or an index to help inpatient treatment and/or care. Finally,
aggregated data is data that is from groups of people and has no identifiable aspects to the
information. An example of this would be information that has been collected for a report from a
facility on things such as average length of stay or even a particular diagnosis related group or
DRG (Oachs, P. & Watters, A., 2020).
