Course overview – learning goals
- recognize the interdependencies and discrepancies between patient value creation and financial
value creation, analyse generic and specific value drivers of health service organizations, and
can compare the cost of capital with the return on invested capital from a value creating
perspective > lecture 1 (value based perspective), lecture 6 (reimbursement mechanisms),
- apply cost accounting and cost analysis methods and can interpret the results and underlying
assumptions > lecture 2 (lakeside , what should we propose)
- implement quantitative models, for instance by means of spreadsheet modelling, to produce
solutions for financial cases in health service organizations > lecture 4 (theoretical; need to know
how discounting works and how to calculate net present value and interpret the results)
- explain the theoretical principles of budgeting, planning and control systems, differentiate
between the different types of responsibility centres, and summarize design decisions with
respect to the responsibility accounting structure, in particular regarding (financial) incentives
and transfer pricing > lecture 3, lecture 5
- compare alternative investment scenarios, assess its financial consequences and make
recommendations while taking (entrepreneurial) risks and challenges into account > lecture 4
- critically appraise financial analysis and financial decisions in a health service context;
particularly emphasizing the interdependencies and discrepancies between patient value
creation and financial value creation > whole course.
