, POLIOMYELITIS (ACUTE FLACCID PARALYSIS)
Definition:
• It is an acute viral infection caused by the polio
virus affecting the CNS and is characterized by fever
,pain in the muscle, paralysis and muscular atrophy.
INCUBATION PERIOD
• The incubation time (to the first signs and
symptoms) ranges from 3 to 35 days, with a more
common span of 6 to 20 days.
• Poliomyelitis virus infects and causes disease in
humans alone.
, TYPES OF POLIOMYELITIS
It is caused by the polio virus types 1,2, and 3
1. Polio virus type 1 (Brunhilde) commonest.
2. Polio virus type 2 (Lansing) List common
3. Polio virus type 3 (Leon) second commonest.
All three are extremely virulent and produce the
same disease symptoms.
PV1 is the most commonly encountered form, and
the one most closely associated with paralysis.
Individuals who are exposed to the virus, either
through infection or by immunization with polio
vaccine, develop immunity.
