People lead to influence and motivate others to reach a common goal. It sets a clear vision of
what you want to achieve and develops a route for success. Leadership is a vital part of success
in sports, as the athlete is able to receive feedback and motivation from their leader which
improves their ability and performance.
Sports leadership is guiding and motivating teammates so that they can perform at a high level.
It is seen as a collective achievement rather than individual achievement, because of research
done by Lesley Ferkins, which shows that leadership is “created through the actions,
conversations, language, and interactions between groups of people and within a particular
context.”


A leader is required to set an example for the other players so they can replicate the correct
behaviour. An example of a leader is Pep Guardiola who is the manager of Manchester City.
One of his roles and responsibilities as a manager is that he gives his players instructions on
what to do and how to perform in game scenarios. They also require various skills like
communication, decision-making and adaptability.


Sports coaching helps an individual or team to reach their goals in a sporting activity. They
provide instructions and guidance towards the individual/team, so they understand what is
required of them to reach their goal. Sports coaches teach to allow us to move up the sports
development continuum. The continuum consists of foundation, participation, performance and
elite. It also improves participation in the sport as a whole which improves the number of people
playing the sport where their participation is affected by factors, for example, gender and socio-
economic group. In my session, I was a situational leader so that I adjusted to everyone's ability
throughout the main skill builder. a situational leader is able to tailor to everyone's needs in the
group. This was an effective leadership style because no one felt left out because of their
technical ability.
Reviewing sessions is an important role of any leader to be successful. We review to evaluate
our performance and identify strengths, weaknesses and areas of improvement. We can
evaluate in many different ways such as: peer evaluation, self-evaluation and by setting
objectives/checklists throughout the session to see what areas have been done well and need
improvement on. Some factors that you can be reviewed on are feedback, performance, and
learning and development. These can all link to different psychological theories, which can be
used to increase many factors in your session such as motivation and participation.

, In my session I focus on using a situational leadership approach. If I was to use another
leadership style, such as transformational, I wouldn't be able to accommodate everybody’s skills
and complete the overall objective which is to improve dribbling with the ball.
Planning the session beforehand is crucial to having a successful lesson because it allows you
to complete everything you need to and have structure at the same time, so you don't run out of
time.

TIME CONTENT

5 mins Warm up: 2 lines - Dynamic stretches

10 mins Main session:
Get 2 cones and get everyone to dribble in between them in a figure 8 motion
Get into partners.
Receive the ball from your partner, turn, dribble to the cone, turn again and
dribble to the original cone.
Pass back to your partner and repeat.
Skill Development: Dribbling
3 mins Tactical work:
Talk and demonstrate when the right time to dribble is

3 mins Cool down:
Static stretches in a circle
