Unit 2 Assignment 3
Aviation Operations Level 3
Health and Safety in the Aviation Industry

Scenario
I am working as part of a health and safety company at a busy airport. I have been
asked to explain the responsibilities of a Human Factors programme and the benefits
to the organisation and the employee.

A supervisor is a person who supervises a person or an activity. A supervisor would have
responsibilities to its self such as ensuring they are in a stable position so they are able to be
working. Supervisors have a responsibility to others as well. They have to ensure other workers are
working the correct way and are the position to be working. A supervisor’s responsibility to an
organisation would be to ensure the health and safety of workers and itself is in good condition and
ensure there are no hazards and makes sure everyone is doing the correct task.

P10: Identify human factors training requirements.

A human factor programme aims to understand human behaviour and performance. It is used to
optimise the fit between people and the systems in which they work in order to improve safety and
performance.

Human factor training requirements help indicate why aim accident or incident or an human error is
caused and aims to prevent it from re occurring. There are different human factor training
requirements depending on the issue caused. For example, there is a training for airline cockpit
crew. This training aims to prevent the cause of many accidents which was due to poor
communication between crew members. Crew Resource Management (CRM) is a set of training
procedures used for environments when human error can have devastating effects. CRM is used for
improving air safety. This training is required for air crew so that it helps identify crew human errors
which can occur and how it can prevented. This will reveal that poor communication is the main
issue between cabin crew and flight crew. It has been estimated that 80-90% of accidents is due to
poor communication between flight and cabin crew. Human errors occur due to crew members
making errors in doing their work, which has caused accidents. CRM is the well-known airline human
factors training scheme which aims to obtain the most favourable performance of aircraft crew
members.

P11: Explain Human Factors reporting procedures

Reporting procedures in the aviation industry is very important as every accident or incident must be
taken records of. Due to human error, accidents and incidents occur which require reporting
procedures.

CHIRP is the Aviation and Maritime Confidential Incident Reporting Programme. CHIRP’s aim is to
contribute to the enhancement of aviation safety in the UK a maritime safety worldwide, by
providing a total independent confidential reporting system for all individuals’ employees in or these
industries. Reporting can be submitted online, by email or by post. CAA will have an awareness of
this and will be aware of the procedures and incidents reported to CHIRP. A supervisor will have the
responsibility to report any procedure and accident to CHIRP.
