2. Drum Brakes Components- 1. Backing Plate: Provides a foundation for
the brake shoes and associated hardware.
3. Drum Brakes Components- 2. Wheel Cylinders: Convert hydraulic
pressure from the master cylinder into a mechanical force at the brakes
4. Drum Brakes Components- 3.1 Brake Shoes: The shoe rim is welded to
the web to provide a stable surface for the lining.
Each drum in the braking system contains a set of shoes.
The primary or leading shoe.
The secondary or the trailing shoe.
5. Drum Brake Components- 3.2 linings: Provides friction against the drum to
stop the car.
Two general methods of attachment to the shoe are riveting or bonding.
The shoe web is linked together at the end opposite the anchor by an adjuster and
a spring.
The adjuster holds them apart while the spring holds them against the adjuster ends
6. Drum Brake Components- 4 Drums: These are made of heavy cast iron, some
are aluminum with an iron or steel sleeve or liner with a machined surface inside
were the shoe linings are pressurized against.
7. Drum Brake Mechanical Components: 1. Shoe return springs
2. Shoe Hold-Downs
3. Shoe anchors
8. Drum Brake Mechanical Components- 1. Shoe return springs: Can be
separately hooked into a link or a guide or strung between the shoes. These
are normally installed on the anchor with servo-type brakes.`
9. Drum Brake Mechanical Components- 2. Shoe Hold-Downs: To unlock or
lock the straight pin hold-downs, depress the locking cup and coilspring or the
spring clip, and the rotate the pin or lock 90°
