Lumbar Puncture
A needle is inserted into the subarachnoid space of the spinal canal between the third
and fourth lumbar vertebrae.
Client is positioned laterally, in fetal position.
Aspiration of CSF for cytology examination, culture and sensitivity, and various other
tests.
Remain lying flat for 4-12 hours after the procedure to prevent headaches.
, Abdominal Paracentesis
Obtain a fluid specimen for laboratory study
- Normal fluid would be serous, clear, white-yellow.
Relieves pressure on the abdominal organs.
- Used in treatment of ascites (when a large amount of fluid accumulates in the
abdominal cavity).
Client will be in a sitting position for the procedure.
Observe for signs of hypovolemic shock.
Thoracentesis
AKA Chest Tube
Excess fluid can accumulate as a result of injury, infection, or other pathology.
- To remove excess fluid or air to ease breathing.
Also performed to introduce chemotherapeutic drugs intrapleurally.
Lie on the unaffected side with the head of the bed elevated 30° for at least 30 min
because this position facilitates expansion of the affected lung and eases respirations.
