PROJECT - THE EU
, HISTORY OF THE E.U
After WWII came to its end on May 8th of 1945, The western European countries
wanted to create a corporation in order to reclaim their economy, and hopefully
avoid any more wars from breaking out.
So, on the 4th of April 1949, “NATO” was created. NATO is an intergovernmental
security alliance between the U.S.A, Canada and 10 other Western European
countries.
On top of NATO, Europe established its own council, featuring 10
different European countries.
Robert Schuman presented the majority of these
ideas to create the ECSC during his speech on the
9th of May 1950.
Thus, on the 18th of April 1951, the leaders of
Belgium, Luxembourg, The Netherlands, Italy, France and West
Germany.- signed the “TREATY OF PARIS. Creating the European Coal
and Steel Community.
On the 25th of March 1957, the “TREATY OF ROME”
was signed. Introducing the EEC (European Economic
Community) and the “EURATOM” (European Atomic Energy
Community). Creating the “Inner Six”.
The first meeting of the European Parliament was held in
Strasbourg, France, with Robert
Schuman elected as President.
By the 3rd of May 1960, EFTA (European Free Trade
Association) was created.
And in August 1961, the communist government built the
Berlin Wall across the city.
On April 8th 1965, the Merger Treaty was signed. Merging the ECSC, EEC &
EURATOM
In 1974-1975 new democracies were created in Spain, Portugal and Greece. This is
thanks to the death of dictatorship in these countries.
