,1. TEMPERATURE
,▪ Temperature is the degree of hotness of coldness of a body or environment or a
measure of warmth or coldness of an object or substance with reference to some
standard value.
▪ Skin is warm in pyrexial conditions e.g. hyperthyroidism and cold in peripheral
circulatory failure and myxedema.
▪ Sites - mouth, axilla, groin and the rectum with the temperature of the mouth and
rectum being ½ºC higher than that of the groin and axilla.
▪ A central core is maintained at 37ºC but the temperature of the periphery varies
according to environmental temperature.
▪ Normal temperature range is 36.6 - 37.2 ºc in the morning and 37.2 ºc (overall).
▪ In children: 36.5 - 37.5 ºc
, TEMPERATURE REGULATION
▪ Body temperature (BT) consists of the core temperature and skin temperature.
▪ Core temperature is the temperature of the deep tissues which is almost constant
within a + 0.6ºC daily variation except in cases of febrile illness.
▪ The normal core temperature range is 36.6 – 37.2ºC.
▪ Skin temperature rises and falls with variation in the temperature of the
surroundings.
▪ BT increases during exercise and varies with extremes of temperature of
surroundings.
