Civil War
The period of warfare between the Confederate States of America (1861-1865) and the United States
over the issues of states' rights and slavery.
South after the civil war
Former confederate states were treated as territories and occupied by Union forces until they could
prove loyalty. Former slaves were freed and the south was destroyed.
13th Amendment
Freed slaves in 1865
Slaves after the war
Tried to find jobs, move to north, were share croppers
Tenant Farming

tools, etc. in exchange for a "share" of the crop
Lincoln's reconstruction plan
10 percent plan. Confederates who swore allegiance to union were admitted to the union if they
accepted the end of slavery
Problems with Lincolns plan
The republicans thought it was too lenient and Lincoln was assassinated
Johnson's plan of reconstruction
Johnson was Lincoln's VP. Pro-union, from Tennessee. A little more harsh then Lincoln's plan. All States
would have to write an anti-secession constitution and freedom of slaves.
Problems with Johnson's plan
The South did not trust Johnson. The south enacted black codes. Southerners voted into congress. Riots
occurred in south against blacks.
Wade Hampton
Lt. General during war. His property was confiscated and slaves were freed. Showed up to congress in
confederate uniform. People blamed Johnson for Hampton showing up.
, Northern Reaction
Johnson was having problems with S.O.W, he was impeached. Partially impeached by one vote. The last
two years of his presidency were controlled by radical republicans.
Radical Republican Reconstruction Plan
South had to accept 14th amendment. Any southern politician had to be accepted by radical republicans
before they could be sworn in. Military reconstruction act of 1867-south divided and occupied by
military that acted as police. It was difficult to regain US citizenship for confeds. Each state had to create
a pro-union constitution. Had to accept 15th amendment. So many southerners were disfranchised so
northerners and blacks ruled the south.
14th Amendment
This amendment declared that all persons born or naturalized in the United States were entitled equal
rights regardless of their race, and that their rights were protected at both the state and national levels.
Freedmen's bureau
Agency set up to aid former slaves in adjusting themselves to freedom. It furnished food and clothing to
needy blacks and helped them get jobs
African Americans in Reconstruction
Initially gained freedom, but were restricted by whites. Eventually, southerners regained control of
congress in 1870's
Nathan B. Forrest
1866- confederate general founded the Klu Klux Klan- terrorist acts to put fear into blacks to enforce
white power; Grand Wizard of the KKK
Collapse of reconstruction
RB Hayes ends republican reconstruction plan, pulls out soldiers and pardons confederates. The
reconstruction was a failure and southerners never forgave.
Jim Crow Era
(1877-1969) Segregation reigned. Blacks got the lesser stuff. Vagrancy laws were enacted. Grandfather
clause-if your grandfather could not vote, neither could you. Literacy tests to vote, or poll fees.
Plessy V. Ferguson

blacks and whites were equal..formed in KT

Dakota and Shariah. White guys started killing buffalo and taking their land. 5-50 million Indians lived
out west
