More Spanish-Cuban-American War
February 1898-August 1898. Ended with an Armistice. The real fighting lasted for only 3 months. This
war put Tampa on the map. US invaded opposite of Havanna and fought there way in and picked up
rebel help along the way.Most of the fighting was between Cuban Loyalists and Cuban Rebels.

Some believed that blacks couldn't be officers. They were significant at the battle of San Juan Hill. They
joined the prove their bravery and patriotism and bring equality.

Ended war and Spain surrendered. Freed Cuba. US gained Puerto Rico and Guam. US bought Philippines
for 20 Million dollars. Cuba was in the US sphere of influence

Puerto Rico became US territory, it had 3.5 Million people. PR became th ebest off country in the
carribean. Cuba became a US protectorate by the Platt Amendment because Cuba was not ready for
indepdence but had some independence. The US allowed Philippines to annex in 1899
Platt Amendment
Legislation that severely restricted Cuba's sovereignty and gave the US the right to intervene if Cuba got
into trouble. Made it a protectorate.
Filipino Rebellion (1899-1902)
The rebillion was put down by US forces. US Mil. bases were established and still in place today. 4000
Americans died and 20,000 FIlippino's died. Philippines were formed into a US territory with a colonial
legislation and governor.

Boxer Rebellion
1899 rebellion in Beijing, China started by a secret society of Chinese who opposed the "foreign devils".
The rebellion was ended by US, Russuan and French, troops. China fell into demise and the emperor lost
power. China then had civil wars. Moa Ze Don gained communist rule and Chang Ki Scheck was exiled to
Tawain.
William Jennings Bryan
Populist leader. Anti-imperialist,
Theodore Roosevelt
President from 1901-1909. Born in NY, his dad was northerner, and his mom was a southernor during
civil war. Grew up in wealth. Had health problems. His dad put him on diet and excersize regimen. Went
to harvard. Became governor assistant. and secretary of the navy. His first wife died in 1884 of kidney
failure and his mom died, so he went west and became a cowboy. Led the rough riders. Ran with
Mckinely, became pres when Mckinely was assasinated in 1901. He was very popular. Middle and lower
classes loved him Was an imeralist. Created big stick policy. Supported women's suffrage, started
national parks and wildlife reserves, Muck Racker movement and black rights. Republican
Roosevelt corollary
