1974, 1979, 1984 - Improper testing of Black Americans in Educational Mental Retarded Classes.
Sharif vs. New York State Educational Department
Required that New York must not use SAT as a sole determinate for college entrance.
Griggs vs. Duke Power Company
1971 - Violation of the Civil Rights Act by requiring two written tests and a high school diploma for the
job or a laborer. Court determined that cognitive ability is not necessary for such a job.
Bakke vs. California
1978 - Struck down the quota system for minority groups in professional schools.
Aptitude (Cognitive Ability)
Measures specific ability or abilities, or a potential for performance in a specific task or tasks.
Armed Services Vocational Aptitude Battery
Developed in 1966. Helps the test taker to assess aptitudes and predict performance in academic and
professional areas. Grades 11 or higher. Over 2 million given per year. Scores are used to make military
assignments.
Differential Aptitude Test Battery
Used to ID candidates for hiring, training, and career development in any organizational setting. 1947.
Grades 7 - 12 and adults.
