UPDATE (GRADED A+).
How are White Collar Crime and Corporate Crime different from street crime?
WCC and CC are different from street crime because they are typically committed by individuals in
higher social classes; these crimes are committed during the course of one's job; the offender's
occupational role plays a central role in the perpetration of the crime; and the offender's occupation is
viewed as a legitimate occupation by society.
*street crime can have just one or two victims while WCCs tend to have a larger number of victims
and can affect all members of society in some instances*
Who is Sutherland? Why did he begin studying White Collar Crime? What did he find in his study of
corporations?
Edwin Sutherland first introduced the concept of WCC.
He began studying WCC to call attention to the fact that criminal acts were committed by individuals
from all social and economic classes.
Sutherland's definition and criticisms of his definition
Sutherland defined WCC as "crime committed by a person of respectability and high social status in the
course of his/her occupation"
Criticisms:
1.) Conceptual ambiguity: vaguely and loosely defined; fostered vague interpretations
2.) Empirical ambiguity: only minimally reflected reality; definition underestimated the influence of
poverty on other forms of crime
3.) Methodological ambiguity: Sutherland defined WCC as behaviors committed by members of the
upper class but his research focused on all sorts of offenses
4.) Legal ambiguity: concept was too sociological at the expense of legal definitions of WC offending
5.) Policy ambiguity: vagueness of the definition and its purely academic focus created disconnect
between developing policies and practices responding to WCC and studying WCC
Friedrich's definitions of workplace misbehaviors

Friedrich's 3 types of definitions, their purposes, and examples
1.) Occupational Crime: violations that occur during the course of occupational activity and are related
to employment
a.) organizational occupational crimes: include crimes by corporation
i.e---->unsafe working conditions.
b.) state authority occupational crimes:
