Red Cross Symbols - The Red Cross
A red cross on a white background (the Red Cross symbol) is the symbol used by the Canadian National
Society.
The Canadian Red Cross and the medical services of the armed forces are the only organizations that
have the right to use the Red Cross symbol in Canada.
It must be readily recognized and respected around the world as a trusted symbol of protection and
humanitarian aid.
Its use is legislated by the Geneva Conventions Act, the Trade Marks Act, and the Canadian Red Cross
Society Act.
Red Cross Symbols - The Red Crescent
While the Red Cross symbol has no religious, political, or cultural associations, some relate it to the
Christian cross-this association is problematic as it goes against our Fundamental Principles.
In 1929, the International Federation of the Red Cross agreed to adopt an additional, equivalent
emblem-the Red Crescent-to resolve the issue.
, This emblem can be used by any national society in place of the Red Cross.

In December of 2005, the International Red Cross and Red Crescent Movement welcomed the decision
to create an additional emblem alongside the Red Cross and Red Crescent: The Red Crystal.
