Endocrine System
Endocrine system is made up of very small organs called glands, which create as well as release
(secrete) hormones. Glands release hormones in the blood stream, which is then carried forward to
the targeted blood cell. Hormones can be considered as messengers within the body carrying
messages and instructions from one cell to another. Endocrine system pretty much controls cells,
organs and functions of the body. Endocrine system controls moods, growth, development,
metabolism, reproduction and even the functions of the organs. [1,2,3]
The system decides how much each hormone is to be produced and released depending on its
presence in the blood stream, however this can go out of control depending upon the stress,
infection or presence of fluid and minerals in the body. Over production or under production of it
can lead to serious ailments.
Endocrine glands have a crowded network of blood vessels and are like chemical messenger
releasing the hormones to send signals from one cell to another, organs or functions through the
blood. The major glands that dominate the Endocrine system are: [2]
• Hypothalamus glands
• Pituitary Glands
• Thyroid Glands
• Parathyroid Glands
• Adrenals Glands
• Pineal body Glands
• Ovaries Glands
• Testes Glands
• Pancreas glands are part of both endocrine and digestive system.
Reference picture below describes the locations of above glands in male and female bodies.
