INTRODUCTION
Welcome to FRE 022: Introduction to Phonetics and Phonology II. This
is the second part of a rudimentary course on phonetics and phonology.
The course shall treat fundamental concepts as they relate to phonetics
and phonology. Efforts will be made to situate phonetics in its proper
domain of oral language usage. Apart from an introductory module
whose focus is on the idea of code and the primacy of the oral code,
areas to be covered in phonetics will include the nature and scope of
phonetics, with particular focus on articulatory phonetics and its
classification of French sounds. Beyond the study of the individual
French sounds, from the phonetic point of view, the course will feature
basic phonology. Essentially, the course will treat some segmental
phonological aspects including notions like the French phonetic
alphabet, the graphic representation of sounds, and the concept of
syllable. Considering the French language as a spoken chain, certain
pronunciation mechanisms akin to French, like liaison, enchaînement,
rhythm and intonation, will also be touched on.
This course is a three-credit unit course. It is available for second year
students of B.A. in French and International Studies. As you should be
well aware by now, the phonetic infrastructure is the entry point to oral
mastery of any given foreign language. The course intends to broaden
your knowledge on phonetics and phonetics-related issues as far as the
French language is concerned.
This course is thus essential and will be beneficial to any student of
French language because it is bound to enhance your cognate experience
not only in French phonetics and phonology, per se, but also in the
functioning of pronunciation mechanisms as they affect grouping and
structuring through rhythm and intonation.
In this course guide, we hope to tell you briefly what the course is all
about, the course materials you will use to achieve the objectives of the
course, suggestions on some general guidelines for the amount of time
you are likely to spend on each unit of the course in order to complete it
successfully. We also provide a detailed separate assignment file for you.
