, INTRODUCTION
You are coming in contact with a linguistic course FRE 423:
Linguistics Applied to the Teaching of French. This course is a two
credit unit course meant for 400 level French students. The course
consists of three modules broken into 15 units and a course guide. This
course covers many aspects of linguistics as it relates to the teaching and
learning of French as a foreign language. There are no compulsory
prerequisite for this course. We have developed this material in such a
way that it simplifies linguistics and the various ways it could be
harnessed to facilitate the learning of a foreign language such as French
among Nigerian students. This Course Guide tells you exactly what the
course is all about as well as other reference materials you are supposed
to be using. You will also through this material, know how to work your
way through. You will also see in this material, the general guideline for
the amount of time you are possibly going to spend on each unit. Your
tutor-marked assignment is meant for your quick assessment in order to
advance. Your attendance at tutorial classes will help you discuss
difficulties with your tutorial facilitator. You should therefore attend
those classes.
COURSE AIMS
This course aims to:
• bring to your doorsteps the meaning and content of linguistics
• make you conversant with the different aspects of linguistics
• open to you the relationship between the different aspects of
linguistics
• sensitise you on the other functions of linguistics in language
learning especially as it affects other branches of language
learning
• make you appreciate the importance of linguistic comparisons in
the acquisition of a foreign language.
