, FRE 282: INTRODUCTION TO FRENCH LITERATURE (PROSE,
POETRY AND DRAMA)


INTRODUCTION
This is a one-semester course in the second year of your degree programme in
French. It is also a two (2)-credit unit course. The course is broken into 3 modules
(15 units) in all. These units are centred on Introduction to French literature.
This course guide defines what the course is all about as well as the course material
that you will need to consult to make the course simple and within your reach. The
course guide suggests also some general guidelines for the approximate time you
are likely to spend on each unit. It is also interesting to know that the guide contains
a separate assignment file that will serve as your assessment.


WHAT YOU WILL LEARN IN THIS COURSE
The general aim of FRE 282: Introduction to French literature is to introduce you to
the rudiments of French literature. The course is targeted at making you go through
a kind of introductory study of French literature from one century to another.


Course Aims
This course aims at integrating you into French literature between the beginning of
Middle Ages and the end of the 20th century. The course will expose you to some of
the important aspects of this period. This will be achieved through various means
under which you will be introduced to, such as:


• The beginning of French literature which dates back to the Middle Ages,
• The literary situations of each century from the beginning of French
literature,
• The literary movements and the writers that contributed to the growth of
literature through their various texts,

, • The ideologies and events that took place from the Middle Ages till the
Contemporary Age.



Course Objectives
For the above aims to be achieved there are overall objectives set. Aside from this,
each unit of this course has its specific objectives that are found at the beginning of
each unit. You will need to go through these objectives before you start working on
each unit. You will equally need to refer to them in order to evaluate your progress
and confirm how far you have assimilated in the course. On completion of a unit,
you also need to look at the objectives to ensure that what is required is achieved.


You will find below objectives that are set in order to achieve the aims of this
course. On successful completion of this course, you should be able to:


• Define French literature,
• Mention the centuries that French literature covers from inception till date,
• Relate the history of France during the reigns of the Kings mentioned in the
units,
• Mention some important figures in each century,
• Discuss briefly about social and religious situation of the centuries
mentioned,
• Discover the relationship between social and religious life and their
influence on the literature of the century,
• Appreciate the role of some of the Kings in the development of French
literature,
• Identify the three literary genres that cut across various centuries,
• Define the said literary genres,
• Explain with reference to each century these notions: la poésie, le roman et
le théâtre,

, • Mention the genres of novel as discussed in the units,
• Mention some of the writers who participated in the development of those
literary genres,
• Trace the origins of French literary movements,
• Define the major literary movements in the history of French literature,
• Mention some of their characteristics,
• Outline their styles,
• Discuss about the life of some of the writers and their contributions to their
society,
• Mention some of such works produced through these literary movements,



WORKING THROUGH THIS COURSE
To complete this course you will be required to read the study units through the
Modules. There are three modules, each module contains five units. (15 in all) and
read/consult set books and other materials related to French literature. You are to
submit your Tutor-Marked Assignments to your tutors. The course will take about
15 to 20 weeks to complete. The break down into units will facilitate your reading
as well as your personal research in order to finish on time.
